-Although not deemed aggressive, the Blue Heeler breed comes with strong herding instincts.

-They are prone to try to herd other animals and even young children as they run around.

-They're also prone to nipping legs and feet if they want attention.

-They're also incredibly protective of their home and their owner/s

-Blue Heeler's need to be integrated and socialised from puppyhood.

The baby will remain in the Women's and Children's Hospital overnight.

She will be monitored before she is discharged on Tuesday.

It is the second dog attack in just a week in the state.

A 72-year-old man was mauled by his neighbours Bullmastiff cross at Willaston, north Adelaide last Monday.

It's alleged the man had fallen over on top of the pet's female owner.

The dog then became protective and allegedly lashed out at the man, biting into the man's throat and face.

The elderly man was air-lifted to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Both the Blue Heeler and Bullmastif cross breeds are known to be protective and defensive of their homes and owners.

They need to be socialisied early on from puppyhood.
