Most of the time lost in the urge to “get away” is the fact you actually you don’t have to go far if an interesting experience is what you’re looking at.
Of course, from time to time “getting away” means “getting away” — be it 100 miles or 10,000. You need some refreshing scenery; however the point is there are many beautiful things nearby so you don’t really even need to fool with planes, trains and automobiles if you don’t want to.
I was remembered this the previous week when I sat in on an “I Am Tourism Ambassador Training Class,” a periodic workshop provided by Richmond Region Tourism that mainly targets to offer locals with a new perspective of our area — to explore things like a tourist — so that they can represent the region at various events or simply just become better acquainted with their own backyard.
The class is a natural for the ones working in the traditional hospitality and tourism industry, but it has proved quite interesting to a wider audience.
“They’re from all over the Richmond area, which we love,” said Tamera Harris, manager of events and sponsorship for Richmond Region Tourism, of those who sign up for the free half-day class.
“We have everyone from retirees … [to] police captains, teachers. We still do have some from our hotel partners, but we have hairdressers, bakers, Realtors. It’s a very diverse demographic who take the class.”
First time it occurred to me that I was becoming more and more aware with touristic destinations located bit far than with those around the corner was after my family’s seven-week, cross-country trip in 2000.
