Coimbatore: Forest department fined five men, who were caught poaching a wild hare near the foothills of Maruthamalai near Vadavalli.

An official said the incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. “We were on patrol to monitor the movement of wild elephants when we got information that a group of men were roaming in the area. When we reached the spot, the men had already killed a baby hare. We reached there in time, or else they would have poached more,” he said. The men hailed from Viraliyur and Narasipuram. “They had killed the hare with sticks,” the official added.

The five men were slapped with a fine of Rs 5,000 each and were let off with warning.

In 2017, the officials had nabbed four men, who had set up snares near Vadavalli to catch wild hares.
