There is huge potential for horticulture startups in the country, both from employment and income generation perspectives, since the nutritional food security of the country is possible only with cultivation of horticulture crops, Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC) C. Parthasarathi said here on Monday.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a 10-day training on Horticulture Education, Research and Extension, he said there is a need for drastic changes in the cultivation of horticulture crops based on the changing climatic conditions and consumer preferences. He suggested cultivation of horticulture crops which can withstand higher temperatures and water stress.

Further, he stated formulation of bio-pesticides and insecticides are necessary to increase the extent of organic farming. There is also need for higher scientific intervention in the formulation of bio-fertilizers.

Mr. Parthasarathi said organic products scrupulously following food safety and traceability norms would have better demand among consumers. He urged scientists to focus on research for horticulture crops that would meet nutritional and health needs. There is a huge scope for new opportunities, new crops and higher income generation in horticulture, he stated.

Director of Horticulture L. Venkatarami Reddy said both the State and the country were lagging behind in the per capita consumption of fruits and vegetables required for health, compared to the international average. About 120 horticulture and agriculture scientists, experts and officials of Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University attended.
