Kanpur: The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Ghatampur area of the district rose to three with the death of one more person on Monday.
Police said the deceased, identified as Bhola Nath (60), native of Khadri village of Ghatampur, had bought the spurious liquor from a grocery shop on Thursday.

Locals fear the toll may rise as the condition of two persons, including Bhola Nath's nephew Umesh, and their neighbour Babbu, who are undergoing treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai hospital, is stated to be serious.

To recall, two persons died on early Saturday evening, while the three critically ill, identified as Narendra, Ved and Jeetu, are undergoing treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai hospital. Those who died have been dentified as Birendra (30) and Shiv Shankar (46), of Sukhaiyapurwa village.

They had bought the liquor from a grocery shop owned by Rahul Yadav, a salesman at a country-made liquor shop in Gauri Kakra village on Thursday night. The third death came to light on Monday morning when Bhola Nath, undergoing treatment at LLR hospital, died during treatment. His son Arvind said that his father, his nephew Umesh and their neighbour Babbu, too, had bought the liquor from Rahul's shop on Thursday.

"My father and my cousin Umesh and one of our neighbours--Babbu-- had bought the liquor from Rahul's grocery shop on Thursday night. My father's condition deteriorated on Sunday following which we took him to a hospital in Bhitargaon area of the district. On Monday morning, he was referred to LLR hospital where he succumbed during treatment," Arvind told TOI.

After getting information, the police reached LLR hospital and shifted the body to morgue for postmortem examination. Villagers alleged that Rahul used to bring 20 to 25 pouches of the country-made liquor from the country-made liquor shop and increase their quantity by mixing chemicals, repack the pouches and sell them from his grocery shop in order to make quick buck. SSP, Anant Deo, meanwhile, suspended inspector Ghatampur Janardan Pratap Singh on Monday. "Investigation is being conducted to corroborate allegations of villagers that Rahul used to add chemicals in the liquor pouches bought from government country-made liquor outlets, said Circle Officer Shailndra Singh. "Inspector Ghatampur has been suspended by SSP for negligence", he added.

Three policemen were suspended on Saturday. District magistrate Vijay Vishwas Pant had ordered a magisterial probe into the hooch tragedy.
