Trichy Corporation removes political banners, graffiti

TRICHY: A day after Election Commission of India’s (ECI) model code of conduct came into effect ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Trichy Corporation officials swung into action on Monday by taking up a drive to remove political graffiti, banners, and wall posters from various parts of the city.
The civic body said more than 120 workforce would be deployed to clear the political advertisements on both public and private properties visible for the public view.
Civic body sources said as per the directives of ECI, they have constituted zone wise teams in in Ariyamangalam, Srirangam, Ponmalai and K Abishekapuram falling under the Trichy East and Trichy West assembly segments.
Though the beautification drives taken up by the civic body has paid off in safeguarding a section of public properties such as Cauvery bridge, Thennur RoB and Palakkarai RoB from becoming victims for political advertisements, officials said that the properties of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) passing through the city have got rampant political graffiti.
“Compound walls on the Pudukkottai Road connecting Trichy Airport and railway properties in Ponmalaipatti were cleared off. Within a couple of days, all political graffiti and hoardings in Trichy city will be removed” an official source with the Trichy Corporation said.
