FALL RIVER — A man was stabbed Monday morning near the Xtra Mart on Bedford Street, according to police.

The clerk at the convenience store called 911 at 8:24 a.m. to report a man walked into the Xtra Mart at 1012 Bedford St. bleeding, said Sgt. J.T. Hoar.

“The clerk saw that this person was outside and came into business bleeding,” he said.

The suspect fled down Bedford Street, Hoar said. Police rushed to the area and took the suspect, a man in his late 30s or early 40s, into custody.

No charges have been filed yet. Police are investigating.

The victim’s age and place of residence were not immediately available. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment and is listed in stable condition, said Hoar,

Police were still interviewing the suspect just after 11 a.m. Monday.

“We’re still trying to make heads or tales about what occurred here,” Hoar said.
