CHANDIGARH: Polling for the lone constituency of Chandigarh in the Lok Sabha elections will be held on May 19, giving ample time to the election department of the UT administration to prepare themselves.
As per the electoral roll finally published on January 28, the total electors in the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency are 6,19,249. A total of 597 polling stations will be set up, out of which 212 will fall under sensitive categories. Sources said a majority of sensitive polling booths are in the areas of rehabilitation colonies and villages. “Besides local police, optimum deployment of central and paramilitary forces will be done in these sensitive areas. Moreover, as all these areas have maximum number of voters, other arrangements will also be made,” said an official.
As per the directions of the Election Commission of India, webcasting will be conducted in all the polling stations.
Nodal officers have already been appointed. New C-Vigil app has been launched by the Election Commission in which any resident can lodge cases relating to violation of the model code of conduct. On receiving the complaint, the flying squad shall reach the place of the incident within 15 minutes and report back within 30 minutes to the officer concerned. In this app, the complainant has to capture the image or videograph the incident so that the action can be initiated within 100 minutes. The nodal officer for expenditure monitoring has also been appointed to check the day to day account of the contesting candidates. An expenditure monitoring cell has also been created.
Each polling station will have one booth level officer, who will be the in-charge of that polling booth, monitoring the works of the employees working there and solving any problem. All BLOs officers will be monitored by assistant election returning officers, who are three IAS officers posted as SDMs, Arjun Sharma, Saurabh Mishra and Nazuk Kumar.
