Wimmer’s VW Polo R WRC Is A 414 HP Street-Legal Animal

If you’re a hot hatch enthusiast, then you definitely remember the Polo R WRC that came with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four putting out 220 PS (217 hp / 162 kW) and 475 Nm (350 lb-ft) of torque. That’s more than today’s Polo GTI, whose engine pushes out only 200 PS (197 hp / 147 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque.

It does make sense, though, as the former was a special edition, while the latter a normal production car.

Now, why would we bring up the old Polo R WRC? Simply because Wimmer has tuned an example to insane levels of power. The package includes an upgraded turbocharger, adjusted air intake, modified high-pressure pump, 6-bar fuel pump, Y-pipe with sport catalytic, intercooler, stainless steel sports exhaust system and optimized software.

That’s a lot of work put into the small hot hatch, which now has a whopping 420 PS (414 hp / 309 kW) and 651 Nm (480 lb-ft) of torque. This allows it to reach a top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph), and even though Wimmer hasn’t disclosed the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint time, you can get it will be pretty fast.

That kind of power commands a serious price: the Level IV package comes at €10,200 ($11,572), or about the same as a new Volkswagen Up! in Germany, while you can also opt for a €97 ($110) K&N air filter, €1,699 ($1,927) KW coilover suspension and €2,200 ($2,496) BBS 18-inch rims wrapped in 215/35 tires. But with the tuned Polo you can mix it with the most powerful hot hatches currently in the market – and if you don’t add any fancy stickers or wraps, you’ll have quite a sleeper.
