NEW DELHI: A pub in Hauz Khas of south Delhi was raided by the excise department and Delhi Police on Saturday night and its three managers were arrested on charges of illegally serving liquor to customers without a licence. The owner, Ajab Singh, a resident of Fatehpur Beri, reportedly escaped and police are on his lookout.
The raid was conducted at Wrong Turn cafe and bar. The arrested managers have been identified as Malkeit Singh, Chander and Bobby. The role of other employees and the management is also being probed, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Vijay Singh.
An FIR under sections 33 and 38 of Excise Act has been registered and the pub will be sealed, police said. More sections will be added to the FIR if further violations are found.
“The raid was conducted on the directions of senior officers to bust illegal sale of liquor in bars, hotels and farmhouses,” said a police officer.
Police said the cafe’s licence had expired six months ago. They continued to serve liquor without renewing the licence, thereby causing loss of revenue to the exchequer. A probe is on to find out if liquor was procured from Haryana and Indian Army’s CSD canteen at subsidised rates and sold at high rates. The pub was also serving foreign liquor mixed with cheap Indian liquor, but the customers were allegedly charged for the imported brands.
“A huge quantity of illegal imported liquor, including over 100 beer bottles, whiskey, vodka, wine and rum, coupons, Rs 11,000 cash and other documents have been seized. Country liquor of different brands has also been seized,” the officer added. The cafe managers told cops that many customers had paid bills using cards through their point of sale machine.
Despite repeated attempts by TOI, representatives of the cafe were unavailable for comments.
