PUNE: Two persons were arrested on Friday night for duping nearly 39 people in an alleged army recruitment scam in Satara.
The arrests were the result of a joint operation by the Army’s Military Intelligence (MI) unit at Southern Command and the crime branch of Satara police.
The police claimed the duo had been charging individuals anywhere between Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in exchange for jobs in the Indian Army.
The matter came to light when one Amol Rajaram Jadhav, 26, from Aangapur village in Satara district registered a first information report (FIR) against the duo with Satara police a few days ago.
According to the police, the complainant and a friend, Vaibhav Kanse, had paid the two arrested men Rs 5 lakh in June, 2017.
“Our primary investigation revealed that the accused had created a bogus ‘joining letter’ of the Army. Using that letter, they falsely promised Jadhav and Kanse recruitment opportunities with the Kolhapur-based 109th battalion of the Territorial Army (TA) of the Maratha Light Infantry (MLI). When they failed to keep the promise, the aspirants started demanding refunds. Jadhav proceeded to file an FIR after he failed to get a response from the duo,” a police official told TOI.
The two arrested men have been sent to police custody until March 12.
Senior police officials, however, added that it’s likely the scam involved others.
“An investigation is on to determine how this recruitment scam was being operated across the district,” said superintendent of police, Tejaswi Satpute, of Satara police.
