Surat: The much-awaited Dumas recreation project’s first phase is expected to be completed in the next four months.
Under this phase, a 500-metre stretch starting from Dumas Langar to seven-feet tall metal statue of Morarji Desai will be developed as an activity zone at the cost of Rs 4 crore .

This activity zone will house interactive fountains, cultural performance area, New Gateway to Sea , cafe, Vibrant Pathway, interactive features of water bodies, fountains, small play areas, shaded avenues, music and public address system, sculptures and LED displays.

Vishal Shah, architect and consultant of the project told TOI: “The activity zone project is in the last stage makeover. This redevelopment has been undertaken with a purpose to give people a sense of arrival at Dumas when they land at the place.”

There will be a four-metre wide pedestrian passage developed in 36 metre road from Langar to Morarji Desai statue where people can stroll along with activities on both sides.


This 500 metre stretch will depict heritage of Dumas through murals and sculptures of related to history of the place. There will be interactive fountains on both sides with a plaza. There will also be a ‘I love Dumas’ sign to give a sense of arrival on the beach that is one of the most-visited spots on weekends.


Ashish Dubey, in-charge of Athwa zone of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) said, “This is will be one of the most sought-after recreation spots in the city. The work of flooring and final work of setting up interactive fountain is going on. Similarly, placement of sculptures and murals is also on. We expect work to be completed by May-June 2019.”


The activity zone is the first phase of redevelopment of Dumas seashore development plan . In all, 102 hectare land is likely to be redeveloped in coming years.
