Three pilgrims mowed down by speeding car in Tamil Nadu

TRICHY: Three pilgrims, including two women, who were undertaking a padayatra (walking on the foot) towards Samayapuram Arulmigu Mariamman Temple near Trichy in Tamil Nadu were mowed down by a speeding car on Sunday morning. Two other pilgrims sustained severe injuries in the accident that happened near Perambalur on the Chennai-Trichy stretch of the National Highway 38.
The deceased have been identified as R Kaveri, P Kaliyan, and R Parameshwari, all aged 60 years. They hailed from Siruvachur village in Perambalur district. The injured, identified as Maruthambal and Solaiammal, were admitted to Perambalur Government Hospital.
All of them were going to Arulmigu Mariamman Temple to take part in the Poochorithal festival. Around 5.30am, when they were nearing an Anjaneyar temple at Padalur, a car that was going to Pudukkottai mowed them down from behind.
Police sources said the car driver had dozed off on the wheel, leading to the accident.
The Padalur police registered a case.
