Tragedy as bodyboarder, 18, drowns at a popular surf beach in New South Wales

- He went under the water and failed to surface, before his friends pulled him out
- Paramedics rushed and attempted to revive him, but the man died at the scene
A teenager has died after he was pulled unconscious from the surf of an unpatrolled surf beach in New South Wales.
Paramedics and a rescue helicopter rushed to the scene at Pinny Beach in the Lake Macquarie region on Sunday morning.
It's believed an 18-year-old man was bodyboarding in the ocean before he went under and failed to surface.

He was pulled from the water by his friends at about 10am who attempted to perform CPR on him.
The Westpac Rescue helicopter was used to drop paramedics into the small, isolated stretch of beach, The Newcastle Herald reported.
Paramedics took over and attempted to treat him but he was unable to be revived.
Ambulance NSW said it's understood the teenager went into cardiac arrest after he was pulled from the dangerous waters.
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service spokesman said they were called to the scene but didn't transport anyone to hospital.
The unpatrolled beach is a 250-metre stretch of sand and has been described as 'hazardous' and not safe for swimming.
