Nagpur: Lamenting the media for quoting him out of context on various issues, union transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said he always believed that family comes first before a political career.
A similar statement made by Gadkari last month had created controversy as some sections of the media interpreted it as a jibe at leaders within his party.
Speaking at an interview anchored by Dr Manoj Salpekar and organized by Chitnavis Centre, Gadkari said that his advice to everybody is that they should not ignore their family responsibilities just because of a desire to join politics. Clarifying on the statement, Gadkari said by taking care of the family first, every person can ensure that they remain non-corrupt.
“Today no one can buy me because my business has made my family financially self-sufficient. As of now, I am not involved in any business; my sons take care of it, and they are handling it in a much better way,” Gadkari said.
“Had that not been the case then I would have needed a sponsor who would ultimately exert pressure on me in political arena. That’s why I say to everyone, first take care of your family and then join politics,” said Gadkari.
The cultural event organized by Chitnavis Centre was the first in a series of shows where well-known people will be interviewed while artistes will perform their favourite songs in between.
In a freewheeling interview, Gadkari opened up about his perception among people. “My problem is that people overestimate me. They believe I can do things which are beyond my ability. At the same time, I get involved passionately with issues that touch my heart even though politically it does not pay dividends,” said Gadkari.
He was referring to his involvement with farmers and empowering them through various initiatives. “If you look at Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency, there are no farmer voters. But the farmer suicide issue touched my heart so much that I could not help getting involved and trying to do something for them,” said Gadkari.
Since the Sunday event had a strong cultural tinge, he was asked about his opinion on famous artistes taking up political careers. “90% of them fail. I had visited Rajinikanth in Chennai and told him that it’s best that he stay away from politics. And also because he is an absolutely down to earth person. I strongly feel that one should focus on one’s strengths,” said Gadkari.
