Pune cop suffers bullet injury in bid to stop brawl in bar

PUNE: A sub-inspector suffered a bullet injury in his leg while pacifying two groups engaged in a brawl at a restaurant-cum-bar in Vadgaon Maval, about 40km from the city, around midnight intervening Friday and Saturday.
Three persons were arrested on Saturday morning for allegedly opening fire at the policeman. They have been identified as Dada Balu Dhavale (38), Sunil Vilas Palkhe (27) and Santosh alias Bittya Balasaheb Gaikwad (21), all residents of villages near Hinjewadi in Mulshi taluka.
Injured sub-inspector Nitin Mohite is recuperating in a private hospital at Somatne Phata. The police said he was operated upon on Saturday morning and was out of danger.
The Vadgaon Maval police said the restaurant-cum-bar on old Pune-Mumbai highway remained open till late in the night. It has been operating with performance licence and organizing orchestra at night.
According to the police, Manoj Sidhayya Telugu (29), a resident of Dehu Road, and his friends picked up a fight with the arrested trio around midnight intervening Friday and Saturday. The two groups started shouting and beating up each other.
A patrolling team headed by sub-inspector Mohite rushed to the bar-cum-restaurant after receiving an emergency call. When the police team reached the spot, Dhavale was in the washroom of the facility. The policemen learnt from the others at the spot that Dhavale was carrying a firearm and had threatened others earlier.
When the policemen rushed inside the bar-cum-restaurant to nab Dhavale, he opened fire at them hearing their footsteps.
The bullet hit sub-inspector Mohite in his leg.
The shocked police team immediately took cover. The suspects fled taking advantage of the situation. Mohite was then rushed to the hospital.
Superintendent of police (Pune rural) Sandeep Patil and other senior officers rushed to the spot after the incident. Later in the morning, the police zeroed in on Dhavale, Palkhe and Gaikwad.
The police seized the firearm of Dhavale and booked the trio for attempting to murder the policeman. The police also invoked the provisions of the Indian Arms Act against the suspects.
The police said Dhavale had a licensed firearm. They have sought the licence from him.
