PANAJI: Aspirants for the police force will now have to wait till the Lok Sabha elections are over as Goa police have decided to start the recruitment of 300 personnel only after the end of the code of conduct.
The state government had approved 902 posts for Goa police at various levels, including revival posts. The total sanctioned strength of Goa police is 7,848, and the current strength, 6,051. “We will start recruitment after the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections is over,” superintendent of police (headquarters) Shekhar M Prabhudessai told TOI.
The recruitment of police personnel will be done in three phases — the first will start immediately after the code ends, and the other two every 18 months after that.
Goa police had asked the state government for permission to recruit 1,228 more personnel to strengthen its force. In the proposal, the force said that the rising influx of tourists has made the maintenance of law and order challenging. The government has approved posts from superintendents of police (SPs) to constables. The 902 sanctioned posts include three SPs, 12 DySP, 36 police inspectors, 240 police sub-inspectors, 201 assistant sub-inspectors, and 240 head constables and constables.
They stated that the influx of migrants, tourists and the state’s rapid industrialization has resulted in an increase in organized crime, economic crimes, and cybercrimes. Also, the increasing number of vehicles has put a lot of pressure on the force’s traffic units. The proposal also states that while over the past few years, a number of posts of constables have been created, there has been no proportionate increase in posts of head-constables, ASIs, PSIs, PIs, DySPs, and SPs.
