Coimbatore: As there is no place for recreation in the city, urban lakes are being revamped and developed to include leisure aspects like those on Marina Beach in Chennai, minister for municipal administration S P Velumani said here on Saturday.
The minister was speaking after laying foundation stone for smart city projects. He inaugurated projects to the tune of Rs 224.10crore.

Under the projects, Periyakulam bund will be strengthened and the lake will be rejuvenated at a cost of Rs 62.17crore. The Selva Chintamani lake bund will be strengthened and rejuvenation work will be carried out at a cost of Rs 31.47crore. A multi-level car parking facility will be constructed on DB Road at RS Puram at a cost of Rs 40.78crore. LED streetlights will be installed at a cost of Rs 74.70crore. Underground drainage will be constructed at Sivaram Nagar at a cost of Rs 14.98crore.

Development works have been initiated in 11 cities out of the 12, which were selected under the smart city mission in Tamil Nadu, Velumani said.

The civic body had floated tenders for rejuvenation and beautification of three lakes in the city in January. In that round, bidders were interested only in Periyakulam. Subsequently, the corporation floated another tender two weeks ago, in which bidders expressed interest in Selva Chintamani lake. The civic body is planning to float another tender for rejuvenation and beautification of Valankulam.

The corporation had floated tender for the multi-level car parking facility on DB Road last December for the third time. The facility, to come up on an area of 11,600sqm, can accommodate more than 370 four-wheelers at a time.
