BENGALURU: Today, he is a world-renowned spiritual leader, having touched thousands of lives directly or indirectly through his work. His quest for peace and harmony has taken him to many countries. On Friday, he was appointed to a committee that is mandated with resolving the Ayodhya dispute.
Born in 1956 in Papanasam, Tamil Nadu to Visalakshi Ratnam and R Venkat Ratnam, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar spent most of his growing years in Karnataka, always inclined to do what he is doing today. By the age of four, Sri Sri, as he is popularly known, was able to recite the Bhagavad Gita and was often found meditating. In 1982, he entered a 10-day period of silence in Shivamogga and the Sudarshan Kriya, a powerful breathing technique, was born.
With time, Sudarshan Kriya became the centerpiece of the Art of Living (AoL), an organisation he founded in Bengaluru and continues to head. Sri Sri, who holds a degree in both Vedic literature and physics, did his BSc from St Joseph’s College in Bengaluru. There are anecdotes about him playing cricket with friends at the National College Grounds.
From Kashmir, Assam, and Bihar in India, to Colombia, Kosovo, Iraq and Syria, and Cote d’Ivoire, Sri Sri’s programmes have had documented impact on people involved in armed conflict to pursue the path of peace.
“In a world beset with escalating violence and conflict, Sri Sri is offering another path where individuals find peace within, which becomes the wellspring for peace and harmony in society. For instance, thousands of Iraqis have benefited through trauma-relief programs since 2003,” the official biography on his website reads.
