Chandigarh: Woman commits suicide over dowry, husband arrested

CHANDIGARH: Husband arrested for allegedly forcing his wife to commit suicide on the complaint of his brother-in-law by Manimajra police on Thursday. Victim's brother alleged that the accused harassed his sister for dowry, driving her to commit suicide. The police produced the accused before a local court and sent him in judicial custody for 14 days.


The accused has been identified as Ajay singh Duggal, a resident of Manimajra.


In his complaint, Anil Kumar, a resident of Nayagaon in Mohali, alleged the his sister Seema was married to Ajay nearly 20 years ago. Since then Seema, alleged the brother, had been harassed for more dowry. The husband used to regularly assault her. On March 3, after a fight with her husband, she allegedly consumed some poisonous substance, her brother alleged. Ajay rushed her to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 (GMCH-32) for treatment and informed about the incidett to Anil Kumar and his family.


Seema died in the hospital during the treatment. After the postmortem, the police recorded the statement of Anil and registered a case under sections 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 306 (abetment to suicide) of IPC against Ajay duggal and arrested him.
