Vadodara: Two persons were arrested by the city police for giving loans to needy persons by taking away their ATM cards as well as signed cheques. The accused used to charge high interest rates forcing the desperate borrowers to approach the city police commissioner.
The accused persons – Praveshkumar Singh and Piyush Bhatt – both residents of Waghodiya town near the city, used to lend money to needy salaried persons. The duo did not have any licence for money lending operations.
On their salary date, they used to withdraw money from the ATM or the bank and used to deduct interest as per their wish. If the debtors complained or objected, the accused used to threaten them with dire consequences.
Facing extreme duress from the duo, a group of persons approached police commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot seeking his intervention. Officials of the Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB) of the city police were asked to take up the case. Acting on a tip off, PCB officials arrested Singh and Bhatt from the Waghodiya crossroads on the outskirts of the city.
In all, 570 cheques and 25 ATM cards were recovered from the accused along with cash amounting to Rs 1,71,730.
