PATNA: Dumra police station’s suspended SHO Chandra Bhushan Singh, who is a prime accused in the custodial deaths case, escaped from custody on Thursday, Sitamarhi SP D Amarkesh said on Friday.
Singh was arrested and kept in custody at Runnisaidpur police station. “Runnisaidpur SHO Bhudev Das has been suspended,” the SP said and added that another FIR was lodged against Singh for escaping from police custody.
Amarkesh said Singh, along with other unknown police personnel, was booked in a murder case lodged with Runnisaidpur police station after the alleged custodial death of Mohammad Gufran (30) and Mohammad Taslim (35) on Wednesday. Both belonged to Ramdiha under the Chakia police station area of East Champaran district and had been detained in connection with the murder and loot of one Rajesh Kumar (35) of Jivajod under the Aurai police station area in Muzaffarpur. He was shot dead under Runnisaidpur police station area on February 20.
Singh and seven other police personnel were suspended after the alleged custodial deaths. The SP said Gufran and Taslim were accused in at least five criminal cases of murder, loot and Arms Act. “Investigation indicated their involvement in Rajesh murder case,” he said.
Amarkesh said only Singh could tell about the other police personnel involved in the interrogation and thrashing of Gufran and Taslim were at Dumra police station.
“The postmortem report mentioned about injury marks on the thighs and arms of both the deceased. Their postmortems were conducted by a medical board and videographed as per National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines. Viscera were preserved for further forensic analysis,” Amarkesh said.
Muzaffarpur zonal IG Nayyar Hasnain Khan said massive raids were on to nab Singh and other police personnel who were evading arrest. “Prima facie it seems the two died in custody after police atrocities,” he said. Khan said DIG (Tirhut range) Ravindra Kumar would submit his inquiry report in a day or two.
