The police booked a man on Saturday for allegedly smashing his wife’s head with a stone, resulting in her death, over a family dispute in South City-1, the police said.

The police said they were informed about the incident through a call around 12.30 am from one of the couple’s neighbours, who informed them that the woman was injured by her husband and was lying in a pool of blood in a plot in Block Q of South City-1.

A PCR van from Sector 40 reached the spot and rushed the woman to Civil Hospital. The woman was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital in the wee hours of Saturday. However, the woman succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment, the police said, adding that she had suffered severe injuries to her head.

The accused, identified as Rohit Pal, who is absconding, fled the spot after the neighbours alerted the police.

The body was sent for a post-mortem examination on Saturday and the police said they are waiting for family members to reach the city to complete the formalities.

The police said that on Saturday, after dinner, the neighbours, who had called the police, overheard an argument between the man and woman, who live on the ground floor. “Later in the night, the man, who was inebriated, allegedly attacked his wife with a stone. The woman died and the husband fled the spot,” said Shamsher Singh, assistant commissioner of police (crime).

Singh said they have registered a case of murder against the husband. They are conducting raids at suspected locations for his arrest. They are yet to ascertain the reason behind the murder.
