Cops arrest murder accused, wife

Ludhiana: Meharban police on Friday morning arrested the accused Jagdev Singh, 33, who shot his elderly neighbour in Noorwala village. The accused was arrested from near Hawaas village.

Police have also arrested Jagdev's wife Kamaljeet Kaur who allegedly provoked Jagdev to fire at neighbour. The woman was arrested form near Bajara village on Thursday evening.


On Thursday morning Jagdev Singh shot his 67-year-old neighbour Balbir Singh. It is alleged that Jagdev Singh would often open fire in air with his licensee weapon in inebriated condition. Village Sarpanch Rupinder Singh who is also nephew of the deceased Balbir lodged a complaint against Jagdev with Meharban police. On Thursday morning, a cop from Meharban police station came to Jagdev's house for seizer of weapon. However, Jagdev stated that he would submit the same by evening. After cop left Jagdev opened fire in air and when Rupinder and his uncle Balbir rushed out, the accused opened fire at them also.


The assistant commissioner of police (ACP East) Devinder Chaudhary said, “After the incident Jagdev, along with his wife, escaped from the village. He left his wife near Bajra village and moved towards Satluj river, where he hid the weapon in a field. He then left for a friend’s house. However, as the news of the murder spread, his friend asked him to leave.”


“The accused has confessed that he was excessively drunk on Wednesday night. When cops told him on Thursday morning that Rupinder had given a complaint against him, he opened fire at them in fury. The police have also seized his licensee weapons .315 bore rifle which was used in crime and another .32 bore revolver,” added the ACP.
