GUWAHATI: On the occasion of the International Women's Day, the Consumers' Legal Protection Forum (CLPF), a consumer rights body, launched an anti-tobacco signature campaign involving hundreds of women in the state on Friday.
The anti-tobacco signature campaign was organized simultaneously in two major cities of the state - Guwahati and Dibrugarh. In the city, hundreds of women participated in the campaign and took a vow to fight against the menace and spread awareness about the dangers of consumption of tobacco products.
Advocate Ajoy Hazarika, who is the CLPF secretary said, "CLPF has briefed them about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption. They have now taken a pledge to spread the message among their family members and in the society. Women play one of the most vital roles in building a healthy society and any movement can't be successful without the complete participation of women. That's why today, on the International Women's Day, CLPF wants to engage women in this anti-tobacco campaign to achieve the maximum result."
Assam has shown a 9% increase in overall tobacco consumption, which is a significant rise, in recent times - from 39.3% during the last survey in 2009-10 to 48.2% in 2016-17 as per Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) report, at a time when tobacco consumption nationally went down by 6%.
