VNIT, IIM-N graduates working in MahaMetro

Nagpur: Though politicians are being credited with Nagpur Metro running in a record construction time, many students from city colleges have majorly contributed towards this feat.
When MahaMetro began its operations in 2015, it had recruited six students from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) and since then over 25 were picked up from the premier institution during campus placements.
TOI on June 13, 2015, had reported about MahaMetro, which was then Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL), recruiting six students from VNIT during its initial phase. Two years back, MahaMetro picked up about six from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM-N), another top-notch institution.
Ever since a Metro was announced for the city, it has raised the employment hopes for thousands of city youths who have traditionally moved out to bigger cities after graduation. In the initial phase, many were recruited from the city and adjoining areas.
A majority of posts required technical expertise and, therefore, the candidates were picked up from Delhi and other cities where a Metro is already running. Many retired persons from Indian Railways (IR) are also being recruited in a big way, based on their experience, as per MahaMetro officials.
Since laying of the first brick to its inaugural run last Thursday, MahaMetro has recruited about 427 persons directly in Nagpur office and another 171 in Pune, according to additional general manager (human resources) Ravindra Dhakate.
“We’ve been recruiting VNIT students from the last three batches. For Pune, we picked students from the prestigious College of Engineering. We also have students from other colleges but they’ve applied to advertisements floated by us,” said Dhakate, adding that he didn’t currently have their exact numbers.
Vidarbha Economic Development (VED) Council president Devendra Parekh says the MahaMetro should grant preference to local talent. “In Mumbai, a majority of employees working with local trains are from the city and adjoining areas. It should also provide skill-based training to the youths here so that they could be absorbed at various positions. MahaMetro would be requiring a big number of employees like engineers, drivers, ticketing staff, and in security,” he says.
Shweta Pardikar, who secured a job in MahaMetro during a placement drive three years back, was elated to work with the organization. She graduated in electronics and communications branch from VNIT. “I am working as assistant manager in rolling stock since the last three years,” she says.
Shubhom Gupta and Akshat Sharma were picked up by MahaMetro during campus placements in 2017 at IIM-N. Both are entrusted with the task of looking after corporate management services and PR branding. While Shubhom hails from Gurgaon, Akshat is from Jaipur. Both were given a package of Rs12.5 lakh per annum.
“We’re working on advance technologies like 5D beam and also interacting with funding agencies of the project. The quality of work here is very competitive and the seniors are highly professional. We’re very happy to work with the company where we’re learning a lot of new things,” says Shubhom.
