60% prefer to walk 1.2km while going to work: Report

MUMBAI: Nearly 60% daily commuters prefer to walk up to 1.2km daily while travelling from home to workplace, especially to and from railway stations, according to a report by Mumbai Vikas Samiti, a think tank.
A V Shenoy of the Samiti said, "Meeting pedestrian needs is extremely important for successful transportation planning." It suggested that one or two small areas could be identified for cycle lanes, like Bandra-Kurla Complex, Nariman Point, Ballard Estate or Fort, and BMC set up a cell, comprising enthusiasts. The survey showed that in 72.5% of trips to schools and colleges, students preferred to walk.
