All-women team given charge of air traffic ops at Guwahati airport
Kangkan Kalita | tnn | Mar 9, 2019, 05:34 ISTGuwahati: Celebrating the spirit of womanhood, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Friday handed over the entire operations of air traffic movement at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport in Guwahati to women air traffic control officers (ATCOs).
“Today, as an ATCO, I feel very empowered. I thank the AAI for bestowing the responsibility of managing the entire operations of air traffic movement here on an all-women team to mark the International Women’s Day. Controlling air traffic has always been a challenging job. Discharging such a mammoth task by the women ATCOs is a special feeling,” said Lisa Das, an on-duty ATCO.
She added, “We are grateful for getting such an opportunity. This coordinated effort by the women ATCOs proves that we can execute the most responsible tasks.”
The women ATCOs took charge of the operations in the morning and were seen performing their duties with utmost dedication throughout the day. Besides ensuring safe landing and take-off of aircrafts from the LGBI airport, the ATCOs from the area control office of the AAI located at the Guwahati airport also control air traffic management when aircraft fly over various parts the NE region.
“Being an air traffic controller, we are part of the fastest growing aviation industry. We are celebrating the International Women’s Day at the LGBI airport by controlling all the channels — from tower control to area control centres. All women air traffic controllers have taken charge. This is how we are celebrating the day,” said Shruti Neha, another woman ATCO, who stood at the top of the airport’s air traffic control tower.
On the occasion, Air Traffic Controllers’ Guild of the NE region felicitated all women air traffic controllers at the LGBI airport for their dedication in carrying out day-to-day operations with efficiency. JT Radhakrishna, the regional executive director (in-charge) of AAI, Ramesh Kumar, director of the Guwahati airport, along with ATC guild regional secretary Prabhaker, were present on the occasion. “International Women’s Day honours women who have paved the path towards our progress and struggled to take womanhood to a level where it is now. The objective of Women’s Day celebration is to express love and gratitude towards their contribution to our lives and society,” said an AAI spokesperson.
