Govt clears Surat Metro project just before polls
Dipak K Dash | TNN | Mar 9, 2019, 21:04 ISTNEW DELHI: In what seems to be the last approval of an infrastructure project before the polls, the Centre on Saturday cleared the two corridors of Surat Metro rail project with combined length of 40.35 km. The project will be completed in five years at an estimated investment of Rs 12,020 crore.
The first corridor from Sarthana to Dream city line will be of 21.61 kms comprising of underground corridor of 6.47 km and elevated stretch of 15.14 km. This corridor will connect 20 Metro stations.
The second corridor from Bhesan to Saroli line will be of 18.74 kms and this will be completely elevated stretch, which will connect 18 Metro stations.
Surat has about around 69.36 lakh population.
The proposed corridors will be having multi-modal integration and will have feeder network of bus, intermediate public transport (IPT) and non-motorized transport (NMT).
The project will be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) and will be financed mainly through equity from Central and Gujarat governments on 50:50 basis and loan from bilateral/ multilateral agencies.
