Govt appoints 31 law officers in HC
TNN | Mar 8, 2019, 05:56 ISTRanchi: The law department on Thursday issued a notification appointing four additional advocate generals (AAGs) along with 27 other law officers to represent the government in the Jharkhand high court. The step was taken in view of the large number of pending government cases. The officers will serve for two years.
Principal secretary (law) Sanjay Prasad issued the notice appointing Jai Prakash as AAG-I, Himanshu Kumar Mehta as AAG-II, Anup Kumar Mehta as AAG-III and Manoj Tandon as AAG-IV. Rahul Gupta has been made senior standing counsel-I, Mukesh Kumar Sinha is senior standing counsel-II and Atanu Bannerjee is senior standing counsel-III. In addition, the department has appointed five government advocates, six government pleaders, seven standing counsels, three standing counsel (mines) and three standing counsel (land and ceiling).
Around 80,000 cases are pending in the high court, about half of these involve the government.
Advocate general Ajit Kumar said, “The appointments will help us handle a significant number of pending cases, but we still require a few more law officers. There is a need to make two additional appointments in the rank of AAG, besides appointing other officers.”
Kumar said he was hopeful that the government will create additional posts in the near future.
