She hasn't aged a day and Barbie still looks glam as she turns 60 on Saturday (March 9), coincidentally a day after International Women's day.
To celebrate the company has honored 20 role models from 18 countries with a doll in their likeness.
The British model and activist Adwoa Aboah was one of the women selected (SOUNDBITE) (English) BRITISH MODEL/ACTIVIST AND GURLS TALK FOUNDER, ADWOA ABOAH, ON HOW THE DESIGN TEAM HAVE GONE INTO DETAIL, SAYING: "It's just so nice them not knowing me and them taking into account all the things that make me, me, in terms of my tattoos, my earrings, the shape of my head and the freckles and the skin complexion and it's wonderful to know that although they have never met me, they have taken such great pleasure in making sure that it is a perfect, kind of representation of who I am." In a Barbie world it was sometimes easier to break the mold.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER, BARBIE, LISA MCKNIGHT, SAYING: "In the (19)80s, late 80s, bridging into the 90s she was a CEO and this was a time when there were a lot of movies about women breaking through the glass ceiling and it was very popular in culture and obviously, women themselves were becoming CEOs and gracing the covers of Business Times etc., and so to have Barbie CEO was another proud moment." On her diamond birthday Barbie has seen a multitude of other careers too, including being astronaut in 1965 -- four years before man landed on the moon -- and more recently, careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths.
Another special doll will be released to mark the date, called Proudly Pink, that wears Barbie's signature color from head to toe.
