Brakes failure is suspected to have caused the accident. The PMPML bus was heading towards Pune Municipal Corporation with over 20 passengers on board. None of the passengers in the bus suffered injuries in the accident.

The woman, who was travelling in an autorickshaw, sustained severe injuries. The three others injured in the accident have been discharged from the hospital after primary treatment. The Kothrud police have booked the PMPML bus driver for negligent driving.

The accident led to a major traffic congestion on the busy Paud Road.

Kiran Naik, owner of a food joint at Anandnagar, had narrow escape in the accident. Naik told TOI that around 1.45pm while he was about to park his scooter, he heard a loud thud and an autorickshaw crashed into a pole near his scooter. “The autorickshaw was hit by a PMPML bus. The vehicle then went on to knock down three scooters and stopped a short distance away from the chowk,” Naik said.

PMPML public relations officer Subhash Gaikwad told TOI that prima facie the accident caused due to brake failure. “The bus is presently at the police station. Our officials and RTO authorities are checking it. After we receive a detailed investigation report, action will be initiated,” Gaikwad said.

Bus driver Ananda Garje has filed a report with the Erandwane police chowkey. Garje claimed that when the bus reached Anandnagar chowk he realized that the brake was not working. “I was trying to use the handbrake but the bus didn’t stop,” he said.

Garje said that before he could do anything the bus had already hit an autorickshaw. They the bus hit three scooters. “After plying for some distance I managed to control the bus with gears and somehow managed to stop it. I came to the police station to avoid beating by the irate public,” he added.
