CHANDIGARH: PGI-Chandigarh will host a national-level symposium on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community on Saturday.
The symposium will address many issues related to the LGBTI community including mental health, surrogacy rights and health insurance.
“Despite the decriminalisation of the section 377, there is lot of discrimination and taboo within and outside this community. Due to non-acceptance by the society, there is depression, problematic alcohol use and other mental health issues,” said Dr Venkatesan Chakrapani, department of community medicine and School of Public Health PGI.
“Prior to this, regional seminars focusing on HIV issues of the community have been held. But this is the first national symposium which will include all social, legal and other health topics related to the LGBTI,” he said.
About 200 participants, including representatives from UNDP, UNESCO, National AIDS Control Organisation, State AIDS Control Societies, National Health Mission, FHI360, Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance, faculty and research scholars in medicine, public health and social sciences will attend the seminar.
