Keeping tradition alive in Chandor

The first capital of Goa, Chandor, originally known as Chandrapur comes alive every year when people come together to perform the traditional Mussol Khel dance. Linked to the harvest festival, ‘musal’ is a pounding stick that is used during this dance.

This dance is in honour of the king that ruled the area, and thus the myth and history of the village is recounted through this dance. Here, the men form a circle and dance while they sing songs in Konkani with the musal in their hands. The group moves around performing at various locations before gathering at the Holy Cross Chapel. The dancers here are mostly Christians who dress up in traditional attire like seen during Shigmo.
