Tragedy averted as road caves in

Ludhiana: A major tragedy was averted on Pakhowal Road when a portion of the road caved in on Thursday. The officials blamed old sewerage pipes under the road behind the cave-in and claimed that they had rectified the problem by afternoon.

The officials claimed that manholes constructed on this road, made up of bricks, easily get damaged and seepage of sewage water results in road cave-ins.

A few months back, a similar incident had occurred near Ishmeet Chowk. In July 2018, a large portion of road near Saggu Chowk had caved in and it had taken officials almost a month to repair the same.

Superintending engineer of bridges and road department H S Bhullar said the road caved-in when old manhole got damaged. “But it was rectified in short time. This problem appeared due to old sewerage pipes.”
