  • Ms Handford said five minutes after tornado thinned, strong wind and rain came

Incredible footage has captured the moment a giant landspout tornado hovered near a remote town during a storm.

Sonia Handford was driving to work at Clifton, 150km southwest of Brisbane, when she saw the freak weather event on Thursday afternoon.

'I've never seen anything like this before,' she told Daily Mail Australia.

'I've seen the aftermath of one from 12 months ago, but didn't actually get to witness it.'

Not prepared to miss out on the sight, Ms Handford pulled over to the side of the road and began filming the spectacle.

'It was spectacular,' she said.

In the video, the landspout tornado is seen thinning as it hovers over Mount Molar.

While still a breathtaking sight, Ms Handford said the land tornado measured much larger at the beginning.

'The funnel went up to a high altitude when it started to collapse from the bottom,' she said.

'The base was still rotating quite fast and then it sort of depleted.

According to Ms Handford, said the area was battered with heavy rain and wind just five minutes later.

Landspout tornadoes are much weaker variations of the real deal. But even though they are smaller and last shorter lengths of time, they can still cause damage.

The sighting comes only weeks since parts of the state's south coast was battered with strong winds and king tides.

The torrential weather brought on from Cyclone Oma led to the worst erosion in 40 years for beaches like those in Noosa.
