PUNE: The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited on Friday hinted at starting the work of laying the foundation of the three pillars of the double decker flyover at Nal Stop Chowk this month after a meeting with the city traffic police on possible route diversions.
An official of the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) said, “We are done with the foundation work of 10 pillars. Now, there is a challenge to complete the foundation of the remaining three. We will discuss the traffic management plan with the police authorities. There will not be a complete closure of traffic, but some regulations and rerouting will be introduced as per requirements.”
The double decker flyover would come up at Nal Stop Chowk on Karve Road. Its top tier would be for the Metro. The other would cater to vehicular traffic.
The flyover would come up on 13 pillars. Of them, three would be in the middle of the chowk.
The MahaMetro would require a sizable portion of the road for the digging work. The authorities would have to strike a balance to ensure the flow of traffic during the work at the busy junction. The MahaMetro said the work of launching segments had started towards Garware College. The construction of pillars was completed recently.
Delay barb at BJP
Senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi blamed the BJP for the delay in the execution of the Metro rail project in the city.
Joshi said Nagpur Metro had been flagged off, but the BJP failed to introduce the Metro service in Pune despite having 100% representation at the Centre, state and Pune Municipal Corporation. The BJP leaders should explain why there had been a delay, Joshi said.
Joshi said Prithviraj Chavan, during his tenure as the chief minister, had announced the Metro project for Pune and Nagpur at the same time.
