Women’s group in Mudhol promotes music and culture

Bagalkot: Saptaswara Sangeeta-Nrutya and Samskrutika Samsthe (SSNSS), a non-profit women’s organization in Mudhol, has been promoting music and folk art. It has around 800 members, including 20 in the governing body. In the past eight years, SSNSS has organised several cultural events to retain tradition and culture, and pass the same on to the next generation.
Jyoti Patil of SSNSS said they promote upcoming and amateur artistes by providing them a platform for performance throughout the year. “ Each event costs around Rs 3 lakh. The Kannada and culture department bears some of the expenses, while the rest is borne by our members,” she said, adding that they have not invited any politician for their events.
SSNSS’ active member Nirmala Malaghan said: “With an aim to continue the legacy of our traditional art, our organisation runs a school, offering music nd dance courses up to doctoral level,” she said.
Active members Veena Kakareddy Dr Parvati Naik said SSNSS hosted events in Odisi dance, classical kathak dance, discussion on music, Bharatnatyam, dandiya and given training in garba dance and kathak.
Janapada Zenkar, a five-day workshop conducted by SSNSS in 2012, saw the participation of 360 women and children. A workshop on making cake and pastries by Debra London was also held in association with a star hotel in 2014.
Savita Angadi, Shivaleela Belagali, Dakshayeeni Jambagi, Kaveri Rathod, Vijayalakshmi Patil, Sujata Vastrad, Suvarna Awati are some of those who take the initiative to organise events.
