THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency is poised for a tight triangular fight as Mizoram governor and BJP former state president Kummanam Rajasekharan is set to contest against Congress' sitting MP Shashi Tharoor.
President of India, Ramnath Kovind has accepted the resignation of Kummanam Rajasekharam from the post of Mizoram governor on Friday morning.
"The President of India is pleased to appoint Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam to discharge the functions of the Governor of Mizoram, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements for the office of the Governor of Mizoram is made", an official statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan said.
The RSS leadership in Kerala and a section of senior leaders in BJP had been demanding the return of Kummnan as they felt only he could give a tough fight against Shashi Tharoor. Though speculations were rife for some time about his candidature, Kummanam had been equivocal when journalists confronted him with questions regarding his possible return to electoral politics.
Kummanam was removed from the party state president post in the eve of the Chengannur by-election. His removal had come as a surprise even to BJP top functionaries in the state. Kummanam had given a close competition to both Congress and CPM candidates when he fought the last Assembly election from Vattiyoorkavu seat, which is part of the Thiruvananthapuram Parliament seat. He had earned over 40,000 votes in the election in which the Congress candidate won by a margin of a little over 7000 votes.
The LDF on the other day declared the candidature of CPI leader and Nedumangad assembly seat sitting MLA C Divakaran in Thiruvananthapuram constituency. A leader with strong local connect and acceptance among both CPM and CPI cadres, Divakaran is believed to be good choice for the LDF.
