COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu municipal administration minister S P Velumani on Friday laid foundation stones for projects worth Rs 15.58 crore here.
Weeks after the city corporation has finalised the contractors to provide household Under Ground Drainage (UGD) connections, the minister inaugurated work at seven different places – Brindavan layout, Sokkampudhur, Selvapuram, LIC conoly, Telugupalayam and Anna Salai – to provide household connections to over 17,300 houses.

Explaining that the deposit amount and UGD charges vary as per the property tax, an official from the corporation said that the civic body had taken a soft loan to provide UGD household connections as residents were struggling to pay the deposit amount in a single instalment. Those who are paying property tax between Rs 501 and Rs 1000 will have to pay Rs 3,200 as service charge per year and Rs 10,000 as deposit and it goes on.

“Now, the connection would be given to all the households and the residents could pay the deposit amount in ten instalments. The corporation has taken a soft loan of Rs 36 crore to execute the work. Waiting for the residents to pay the deposit has been delaying the project further,” the official added.

Explaining that the importance is given to the residential areas around water bodies, the official said that they would be able to prevent untreated sewage water entering the water bodies upon completing the UGD work near water bodies.

The minister opened a community park at Pandiyan Nagar at the cost of Rs 25.75 lakh, an anganwadi at North Housing Unit at a cost of Rs 8.75 lakh and classrooms at Edayarpalayam Corporation Middle School at a cost of Rs 60 lakh.
