KOLKATA: A 37-year-old inebriated woman, who lay on the road, allegedly bit and scratched police personnel when they tried to move her to safety and attempted to call her family members. The incident happened in Salt Lake near Central Park around 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Cops were alerted by a group of youngsters about the woman lying on the road in front of an eatery. The group tried to help her but she abused them. The youngsters then tried to pull her onto the footpath and even asked her the phone numbers of her relatives, but she continued to swear at them.

"When we reached the place, we too tried to help the woman and move her away from the main road. We called in women police constables. As they tried to lift her, she bit and scratched them and started screaming," an officer of Bidhannagar North police station said.

The incident forced senior officers of police stations and traffic guards to rush to the spot to manage the situation as the woman was getting violent. She tried to walk away, but was not able to balance herself. "We called in a police car, an ambulance and more women police personnel. They pulled her away from the road and took her to a hospital in the ambulance," an officer said, adding that the woman possibly had a few drinks at a restobar of a major mall located there and tried to walk back to her Salt Lake home when she fell sick.

The cops were able to shift her to Bidhannagar sub-divisional hospital around 1am. Cops said she initially refused to give them her cellphone. After a lot of coaxing, they were able to get hold of her mobile phone and contacted a relative, who later came to the hospital and apologised on her behalf before taking her home.
