TNN | Mar 9, 2019, 04:30 ISTCoimbatore: While women from villages launched an awareness campaign on solid waste management on the International Women’s Day on Friday, a popular jewellery outlet in the city gifted pearl ornaments to about 300 women, who flew out of the city. City’s educational institutions felicitated women achievers in various fields.
Women from 15 villages in Karamadai, who have been involved in solid waste management, organised a knowledge-sharing session on rural solid waste management for the villagers. “The programme saw solid waste management committee leaders from various villages share their experiences in reaching zero waste villages. They also discussed the importance of source segregation, home composting & nutrition gardening in making clean and green villages,” said a statement from the panchayat.
The Avinashilingam Institute of Home Science and Women’s Studies Centre awarded five women for their contribution to social upliftment. Student achievers in NSS, NCC and sports were given medals and shawls.
The awardees included gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Suma Natarajan, gynaecologist working in areas of environmental hygiene, personal hygiene, prevention of illness and early detection of malignancies, Dr Meera Krishna, silambam and basketball coach N Alamelu, NCC cadets V Subashree and Sangeetha Sridhar.
Red Taxi announced plan of launching Pink Taxi, a taxi service by women, for women and of women. The cars will be painted pink and driven by female drivers and will serve only women and girls.
Women travellers, who walked into the city airport, were pleasantly surprised on Friday morning to see jewellery store Zaveri Bros gifting them pearl sets.
Fifty women from Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) donated blood at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. Three women signed documents to donate their bodies to CMCH for medical research and study purposes after their death.
