Hundreds of passengers were left stranded mid-section after an engine and three coaches of Panchvati Express were separated from the rest of the train on Thursday. The incident occurred between Kalyan and Thakurli near Patripool at 9.55 a.m..

The train was on its way to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) from Manmad near Nashik. The engine plus three coaches were uncoupled leaving behind 19 coaches of the train in mid-section.

According to A.K. Jain, senior public relations officer, Central Railway, the engine along with the three coaches was taken to Thane, while the remaining 19 coaches were taken to Kalyan at 10.43 a.m.. A new engine was fitted to the 19 coaches at Kalyan and the train left for the CSMT at 11.43 a.m..

Passengers were left stranded for nearly an hour, after the two sections of the train were brought to the two stations. Railway officials said the passengers were permitted to use local services to the CSMT from Thane and Kalyan.

Due to the incident, several fast locals going to the CSMT were affected. Several trains had to be cancelled, while services on the fast corridor ran around 15 minutes late through the afternoon. Mr. Jain said an inquiry into the incident had been initiated.
