Labour Day 2019 public holiday guide: What's open, what's closed and what's on in Melbourne
Our annual public holiday in celebration of the eight-hour working day has rolled around once more.
And whether you're boisterously screaming out the lyrics to John Warner's ‘8 hour day’ or reenacting the ‘1856 Stonemason's March’ to celebrate the abolishment of 12 hour-six day working weeks, here’s a guide to help you know what stores are open, how to get around, what to do and where to go to help you make the most of this Labour Day holiday.
What's on
Moomba: Australia’s biggest community festival returns for its 64th year over the long weekend. Monday will be the fourth and final day of Melbourne’s beloved carnival. The first water ski show for the day will begin at 11.30am, with everything to be wrapped up with the fireworks display at 9pm. See the full program here.
Brunswick Music Festival: Held in the courtyard of the former Brunswick College, the festival will feature performances from artists including Bedroom Suck Records, Blak Dot Gallery, Bubblebutts, Ela Melbourne and The Brunswick Whey. Find the full program here.
The Myrtleford Festival: Treat yourself to a free festival full of fun, food, fine arts, live music and much more in the heart of Victoria’s Northeast High Country region. Historically, the Myrtleford Festival is held in the centre of town but this year will be held in the lush stunning tree lined recreational reserve. Find the full program here.
The Scoresby Steamfest: If you’re looking for a cross-generational event, why not visit the Scoresby Steamfest over the Labour Day long weekend. There will be traction engines, steam engines, museums and vintage rides down a miniature railway that is sure to delight machinery lovers of all ages. Find the full program here.
Golden Plains Festival: Held over the long weekend at the corner of Nolan and Meredith-Mount Mercer Road is the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre. Come and enjoy the sounds of today, yesterday and forever with artists like Magic Dirt, Confidence Man and Happy Mondays amidst twilight and lush landscapes in this year’s Golden Plains Festival. The festival runs through both Saturday and Sunday nights until 7am on Monday. Find the full program here.
