PUNE: The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) started a baby-feeding centre on the busy MG Road on Friday.
The facility will be useful to women visiting the area.
As women could not feed their young ones at peace due to lack of facility, they were forced to use changing rooms of commercial shops for the same.
The MG Road association took up the matter with the PCB and the board established the centre at a prime location, close to the Cantonment court.
Three women can use the facility at a time.
“A significant number of women come to MG Road and East Street with their babies everyday to shop. They were being inconvenienced as there was no designated place for them to feed their babies. To resolve this issue, we renovated a room adjacent to the Cantonment court and converted it as the centre,” DN Yadav, the chief executive officer of PCB, said.
The centre is equipped with three compartments, waiting rooms, a drinking water facility and a few toys for children.
“The board will also provide diapers and napkins to the babies for free at the centre,” Yadav said.
The PCB spent around Rs25 lakh for the project.
The board’s vice-president Priyanka Shirigiri was instrumental behind the idea of coming up with the centre.
“Almost all the shops have CCTV cameras and hence many women were not comfortable using their changing rooms as well. They had been complaining to us about this issue. Following which, I took up this matter with the board,” she said.
She added that all the elected board members approved the project at a general body meeting.
“It is a perfect gift for women on International Women’s Day,” she said.
The facility will be open for between 12pm and 9pm.
“There will be a woman guard at the centre. If there is any issue, the users can submit their complaints to her,” Yadav said.
