The wait is finally over. Lucknow Metro will start operating on the 23km North-South corridor from Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport to Munshipulia from Friday, 28 days before the deadline.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the Metro through video conferencing from Kanpur at 1.30pm. Union urban development minister Hardeep Puri will show the green flag to the train in Lucknow at a function held at Airport Metro station. He will also ride the train along with officials. The first non-stop run from the airport to Munshipulia will be of 18 minutes operated by Metro pilots Neetu Gupta and Sushant.
In the evening, chief minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to ride the Metro along with some of his cabinet colleagues.
The Metro will be open for public from Saturday.
The construction of Metro started on September 27, 2014. The deadline allotted to the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) to start operations on the North-South corridor was April 2019. However, work has been completed a month before the deadline.
The 8.5km-long priority section of the North-South corridor from Transportnagar to Charbagh was launched on September 5, 2017. At present, nearly 35,000 commuters use the priority section daily.
The number of passengers on the 23km corridor is expected to rise to 1 lakh daily by 2020.
The corridor has 21 stations and the route will cover important destinations like airport, Charbagh and Badshahnagar railway stations, secretariat, GPO, Hazratganj, Lucknow University and Indiranagar.
It also includes a 3.5km underground section from Hussainganj to Hazratganj.
Because the stretch covers popular markets, buildings, banks, government and nongovernment offices, its operation will help in decongesting roads. The Metro will also help in conserving the environment by reducing fuel consumption and reducing carbon dioxide emission. Number of road accidents are also expected to dip. Artworks inside and outside Metro stations are a major draw. While exteriors have been decorated with tile work depicting heritage buildings and glasswork showcasing chikankari.
