GREATER NOIDA: A 60-year-old retired engineer of the Indian Army was allegedly shot at in head by two assailants at his home in Mangroli, Jewar, on Wednesday around 8am. He is also an anti-corruption activist.
Though one of the bullets fired grazed the victim’s head, he was pronounced out of danger by the doctors later in the day.
The ex-Army officer, Shyam Singh Nirmal, took voluntary retirement in 1990 and later joined the UP State Highways Authority where he worked as an assistant engineer.
Nirmal said he retired from the UPSHA six months ago. He is also a founding the member of Bhrashtachar Nivaran Samiti in Greater Noida.
On Thursday, when Nirmal was lying on a cot and his brother was sitting next to him, two men, with their faces covered, allegedly entered his house and fired two bullets at him and fled on a motorbike.
While one of the bullets had injured his head, another had missed the target, said police.
“He was lying on a cot while my father was sitting next to him and was reading a newspaper when suddenly two men entered the house with covered faces. One of them touched my father’s feet and another immediately flashed a gun and shot two bullets at my brother from behind. One of the bullets hit him in the head, injuring him critically. We rushed him to nearby Kailash Hospital in Jewar,” said Nirmal’s nephew, Sundar Singh.
Police suspect the shooting was a result of a property dispute. However, Nirmal’s family members have not named any suspects in the case.
“The victim is out of danger now. It appears to be a case of property dispute though we are investigating further,” the police said. The assailants have been booked under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder). “Due action will be taken soon,” said Sharad Chandra Sharma, circle officer of Jewar.
