Mangaluru: On Friday, various brands announce attractive offers to make women feel special. Mangaluru-based Monkey Mayhem—a fight club and fitness centre—on the occasion of International Women’s Day, has decided to offer week-long free training exclusively for women, and registrations in this regard are open.
Speaking to TOI, Nithesh Kumar, founder and head coach of the fight club that specialises in combat sports like kickboxing, Muay Thai and mixed martial arts, said self-defence is a vast subject and cannot be taught in just 45 minutes. “Over the years, when invited by institutions and organisations to impart training on self-defence, we are forced to restrict our session to 45 minutes. A self-defence course cannot be taught in an hour’s time and hence we decided to introduce women to the basics of self-defence in a week-long course that will be held in batches (depending on the registrations) for one-and-a-half hours daily.”

The most important thing in self-defence is having the right mindset (confidence) and the presence of mind to face any unexpected situation, said Sachin Raj Rai, proprietor of the club. “The first point of defending yourself begins with having the right mindset, followed by virtual self-defence (looks), verbal self-defence (what to say and what not to say when in a difficult situation), physical self-defence (body language and appearance) and finally the actual moves used in self-defence which is a combination of kickboxing, Muay Thai and mixed martial arts,” he said.

Monkey Mayhem has designed a syllabus for this course and students will be given practical demonstrations on how women can tackle multiple situations such as an attempt to stab or molest or misbehaviour on the streets. There is no age restriction and anyone with basic fitness can register for the free course. So far they claim to have trained about 3,000 students in Dakshina Kannada.
