AMRITSAR: A family in Haryana has fixed the marriage of their son with a Hindu teacher from Pakistan despite escalating tension between the two countries.
Parvinder Singh of Peepla village, near Ambala Cantt, will soon get married to Sarjeet Kiran, a distant relative after the two families arranged their match. The two had first met when Kiran, 27, had visited India in 2014.
Parvinder, 33, who works for private sector, told TOI on Wednesday that Kiran’s family had migrated to Pakistan during the Partition. Kiran, a resident of Wan village in Sialkot, Pakistan, will visit India soon with her family as she has been issued a 45-day visa expiring on June 11, 2019 for Attari/Delhi and Patiala by the Indian high commission in Pakistan.
Chaudhary Maqbool Ahmad, a resident of Qadian in Gurdaspur district who had married a Pakistani woman on December 7, 2003 after the terrorist attack on Parliament, revealed on Wednesday that Parvinder had contacted him and sought his opinion about marrying a woman from Pakistan in the time of tension between the two countries.
“Our marriage was the first wedding between an Indian and a Pakistani woman after the 2001 Parliament attack and all went well. The marriage between Parvinder and Kiran would be the first after the recent skirmishes and I hope everything will go as desired by the couple,” Ahmad said.
“In my view, their marriage will give a positive signal for the peace to prevail. It means despite the governments fighting over certain issues common people want peace, he added.
