BENGALURU: Seat-sharing talks between the Congress and JD(S) floundered as the latter is insisting on contesting 10 of Karnataka's 28 Lok Sabha constituencies, sources said. The parties have set March 10 as the deadline to seal a deal.

A meeting between AICC president Rahul Gandhi and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda in New Delhi on Wednesday remained inconclusive, and the JD(S) virtually put the ball in the Congress court.

Gowda said his party had earlier sought 12 seats, but has now requested Rahul to give 10. "Rahulji will take the decision after obtaining inputs from AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka, KC Venugopal, and JD(S) national secretary general K Danish Ali," Gowda said.

Ali said:" The Congress will contest two-thirds of the seats and the JD(S) the rest. We'll reach a decision by March 10." In 2014, JD(S) had contested 26 seats and won two.

Meanwhile, there was talk the JD(S) will contest nine seats and the Congress the rest. The problem is over three constituencies in the JD(S) stronghold - Mysuru, Chikkaballapura and Kolar. It's learnt the Congress may cede one of these seats. While Chikkaballapura and Kolar are held by Congress, Mysuru is with the BJP.
